Not the victorian kind of consumption, with the fainting chairs and pale cheeks, but more of the”why do I have so much crap” kind. And the need to still hold on to it, despite all sane reasons.

As you can tell.

I’ve been packing….-ish.

The packing for Taiwan is a little more extensive than just filling two suitcases. In addition to doing that, I have 4 years of a hodgepodge of boxes from my dorm room/things that didnt fit in my dorm room later/things in my room from before the dorm room/things in kathryn’s room from when she usurped my bedroom when I left for college/things I bought, hoarded, saved.

In facing this giant mountain of stuff, I hope to pare it down a bit. And pare I have! I now have 15 empty boxes —15!. Where did all those things go? Some to goodwill, some into new water/mold/animal proof tubs I bought, some into the trash…because who needs socks from 5th grade and dried up jellyroll pens. I feel like that Clean House program needs to come give me money for doing the job without them.

Still though I have things that I have no idea what to do with. Wooden canvas stretchers, paper lanterns, the beginnings of a quilt, my Baby-Sitters Club board game….any takers? That one might just go into my collection of 80’s board game kitsch along with Mall Madness and cold-war Trivial Pursuit (where last summer we learned the answer to all geography questions is USSR).

Another problem entirely. And not so much a problem as a storage issue is my books. Picture an avid reader, who then becomes an english major buying about 50 books every school year, not counting ones for fun, and ones over the summer, and ones given to her, and ones from “can’t pass this up” discount book sales.

Its alot. It’s heavy. and they can’t stay in the basement and die of mold. So currently I have books filling the entire top of my closet, all the shelves in my dresser table, a whole book case, some of the underneath of my bed…

and I just uncovered another ENTIRE freaking suitcase.

Some would say “give some away, donate to the library you’re always blathering on about..etc”

Completely not an option. Plus about 70% have been written in, since I’m a chronic highlighter/notater-(word?). I think writing in your books shows you love them more…and yes I do personify books. So most people don’t want books that already have opinions laid out in them…though I personally think my opinions aren’t half bad.

Today, I’m nearing the actual packing stage…only to discover I need more tubs for the clothes that won’t fit in my suitcase. Crap.
